Righto. This is it. The first ride. The course is pretty great, but it has some surprises. It starts off with a long innocuous warmup cruise and then gradually gets more and more remote. You'll almost definitely get wet feet if you ride Option A. The Options listed are all at bail-out points, not separate routes, so you can decide to take them when you get to them.

Option A covers the whole course. You should ride Option A. If you're up to it. Even if it takes ages. It really rounds out the whole experience and is a great adventure.

Option B is one half of the figure 8 and covers some beautiful terrain with some nice climbs. If you're gravel or even just cycling curious and not too sure about all of this, come and ride this route. You'll love it. You might even get to the turn off and decide to keep going.

Option C involves a little bit of extra main road and then a short back track up a climb. It's only really included if you get to the turn off and are feeling pretty much cooked. But it's there if you want it.

Some notes to consider:

  • There are NO SERVICES ON THE COURSE, including water (apart from streams). You need to carry what you'll need food, water, and tools wise
  • There is NO MOBILE PHONE COVERAGE on the course (Telstra) except for a tiny bit right at the top of the 8. It's probably best to ride in groups if you can, especially riding Option A
  • There are no GPS files to follow, just a cue sheet. Follow it carefully. It's been tested, but be prepared to backtrack a bit if you make a mistake. Having a GPS with you might still be handy, or riding with someone who has one. There's not too many turns, but some of the course does go through forestry land with trails going all over the place. Following the cue sheet rather than a computer is all part of how this works
Ride as fast or as slow as you like. The aim is to try to build a friendly and inclusive atmosphere, make some new friends, get more people riding, get people out in the bush, etc. Say G'day to each other. Invite people who might not have ever thought about doing something like this. Maybe hang around a bit afterwards and have some hot chips together or something. And share pics using the hashtags below. Seeya there!
